New Partnership Brings football and dance to Haverhill Leisure Centre

A new partnership between Abbeycroft Leisure and Prestige Sports Development has brought new dance classes and a football academy to Haverhill Leisure Centre.Prestige Sports Development has launched a new Dance Academy and Football Academy at the Centre in Ehringshausen Way.The Football Academy runs on Monday evenings for 5 to 11 year olds and on Friday evenings there’s an indoor 6-a-side football league for senior players aged 16 and over.

The Dance Academy, which covers commercial (street dance) and jazz dance, is held every Saturday morning for 3-7 year olds and 8-12 year olds. Instructor Kate Burnhamstudied Dance at Cambridge Performing Arts in Jazz, Commercial, Tap, Ballet and Contemporary.

Prestige Sports was founded in September 2011 and we have expanded each year.  We currently have around 10 coaches working and delivering coaching sessions.

Award winning Abbeycroft Leisure was founded in 2005 and is the largest charitable leisure trust in Suffolk. As a leisure trust and social enterprise Abbeycroft ploughs all profits made back into providing health, fitness and wellbeing for the community

Linton Granta FC footballer Matt Crawley, founder of Prestige Sports Development and an Arsenal FC Youth Coach, said: “We are extremely pleased to have a partnership with such a successful Leisure Centre.  Its fantastic for us as it adds a sense of professionalism to what we do.  The use of excellent facilities is important to us as we believe it allows us to provide a better service to our customers.

“We see Abbeycroft as the focal point for leisure provision in Haverhill.  This accompanied with their excellent facilities made it an obvious choice.  We also feel that parents then have the option to go and use other leisure centre facilities such as the gym while children are on our courses.”

Prestige already runs very successful school holiday football camps for 5-14 year olds on the Centre’s astro turf with between 50 and 80 children attending each session. 

Haverhill Leisure Centre Manager Nigel Snape said: “We are delighted to have formed a partnership with Prestige Sports Development to deliver even more variety of activities at the Centre. Their football camps during school holidays have proved very popular with Haverhill children and we are sure the Football Academy and Dance Academy will be prove to be just as popular.”

The Football Academy takes place on Monday evenings from 5pm to 7pm for 5-11 year olds. The 6-a-side football league runs on Friday evenings from 8.15pm to 9.45pm. The new Dance Academy, which includes commercial (street dance) and Jazz for 3-7 year olds and 8-12 year olds takes place on Saturday mornings from 9am-1pm. Brandon Powerlifting Championships

Brandon Athletes Through to Powerlifting Championships

Members of Brandon Powerlifting Club, who train at the town’s leisure centre, have qualified for the British Drug Free Powerlifting Championships in 2016.

Four members of the Club, which meets at Brandon Leisure Centre every Sunday have qualified for the Championships in Kings Lynn on 27 and 28 February 2016.

Abbeycroft Leisure’s recent sponsorship of the club allowed it to become a member of the British Drug Free Powerlifting Association to enable members to enter competitions and saw the purchase of some new bump weights for their training.

Seven members of the Brandon Powerlifting Club competed in the British Drug Free Powerlifting Association Regional Qualifier in the following weight categories:

Becky Bell – 80KG

Sean Haycock – 75KG

Lee Hyne – 82.5KG – Qualified & Finished 2nd Overall in Male category.

Sean Manning – 90KG – Qualified & Finished 4th Overall in Male category.

Monique McIntyre – 70KG – Qualified & Finished 1st Overall in Female category

Dean Say – 100KG

Natalie Winstone – 53KG – Qualified & Finished 2nd Overall in Female category

Natalie, Monique, Lee and Sean Manning will now go through to the Championships.

Lee Hyne, Instructor at Brandon Power Lifting Club and one of the athletes who qualified, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for our members in their first qualifier with championship lifts.

“Our thanks go to Abbeycroft Leisure who have supported the club for many years at Brandon Leisure Centre and whose sponsorship enabled us to join the Association and therefore compete.”

The Club, which has been meeting at Brandon Leisure Centre for over two years and was opened by Paralympic Powerlifter Zoe Newson in 2012, holds an annual Mr & Mrs Strong Competition every September to showcase the amazing strength of their athletes. It also holds Intro To Strength classes at Brandon Leisure Centre every Tuesday and Friday from 6pm to 7pm.

Karl Holmes, Brandon Leisure Centre Manager, said: “Huge congratulations to Brandon Powerlifting Club. This is a very big achievement for their members and I know how much this means to them. We are thrilled that our sponsorship of the Club has enabled them to compete at this level. We will be wishing them the very best of luck at the Championships in February.”
